Spencerian Script

First developed in 1840, Spencerian Script was developed by Platt Rogers Spencer and taught in a school he established specifically to teach this style of script writing. He developed the method as a unique oval-based penmanship that could be written not only quickly, but legibly for personal letter writing as well as in matters of business correspondence.

This method of scripting soon spread abroad and was taught in the common school system of the day. Unfortunately, Mr. Spencer did not see the great success of his penmanship style for he died in 1864. His sons made it their life's mission to further promote their father's dream and bring it to fruition by publishing and distributing his book, "Spencerian Key to Practical Penmanship," in 1866.

Spencerian Script not only became the standard across the United States; it remained the standard until the 1920s when the typewriter became popular and rendered Spencerian Script use as a prime method of business communication obsolete. What a shame to have lost such a lovely style of penmanship; however it does remain popular for calligraphers to embellish penmanship to this day . . .
